Africa Prepares for the Electric Karting Revolution as Rotax E10 Set for South African Debut

Caleb Odendaal became the first South African karter to drive the E10 kart during a exhibition race at the 2022 RMCGF at Portimao, Portugal

South African karting is set to enter a new era as the highly anticipated Rotax E10 electric karting category makes its African debut, marking a significant milestone not only for local motorsport but for karting across the continent.

The introduction of the E10 will take place during one of the biggest weekends on the South African karting calendar, alongside Round 3 of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge (SARMC) and the prestigious African Open. The event promises to showcase the future of karting while continuing to celebrate the traditional two-stroke racing that has helped establish Rotax as one of the world's leading karting brands.

While further details regarding the competition format, eligibility criteria and qualification process are expected to be announced by the promoter in the coming weeks, it has already been confirmed that the South African event will form part of a three-event qualification series. Each event will offer competitors the opportunity to secure a coveted ticket to the 2026 Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals, scheduled to take place in Portimao in Portugal later this year.

The arrival of the Rotax E10 represents far more than the launch of a new category. It signals a bold step towards the future of motorsport, combining Rotax's renowned engineering expertise with emerging electric technology in a package specifically designed to introduce young drivers and newcomers to competitive karting.

Already gaining international traction, the E10 has been developed to deliver close, competitive racing while significantly reducing operational complexity. With instant torque, simplified maintenance requirements and an emphasis on sustainability, the category has attracted considerable attention from karting communities around the world seeking innovative pathways into the sport.

For South Africa, the debut offers a unique opportunity to be among the first countries outside Europe to embrace the technology and provide local drivers with a direct pathway to the RMCGF.

The timing could not be more significant. South African karting continues to produce world-class talent capable of competing on the international stage, while the sport itself has experienced notable growth across several categories in recent seasons. The introduction of the E10 adds another exciting dimension to an already thriving ecosystem and provides a glimpse into how the next generation of motorsport competitors may begin their racing journeys.

As anticipation builds ahead of the historic debut, teams, drivers and fans alike will be eagerly awaiting further announcements from Rotax South Africa regarding regulations, participation opportunities and the road to Portugal.

All three events will take place at Zwartkops Kart Raceway on the following dates:

  • Sunday, 5 July 2026 — following the Rotax African Open

  • Saturday, 8 August 2026

  • Sunday, 30 August 2026 — following the Rotax National Final

One thing is already certain: when the lights go out for the first Rotax E10 race on African soil, South African karting will be witnessing a landmark moment in the sport's evolution.

The future is coming, and it is arriving quietly, electrically, and at full speed.
