Alonzo Eyes Regional Crown Ahead of Portugal

Alonzo de Oliveira will make his final Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship appearance of 2026 this Saturday, 31 October, when the championship concludes at Formula-K Raceway in Benoni. The Johannesburg youngster heads into the Micro MAX season finale firmly in title contention, just days before making his debut at the prestigious Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals (RMCGF) in Portugal.

The Stretto Racing driver and OMP/Motorsport Fanatix™ brand ambassador currently occupies second place in the championship standings, just 10 points behind the leader. With the final three heats remaining, Alonzo will be determined to end his rookie Micro MAX season by adding another championship title to his growing list of achievements.

After dominating the Bambino category in 2025 and claiming the South African National, Africa Open and Northern Regions titles, Alonzo stepped up to Micro MAX this season. The transition has been impressive, with the youngster securing third place in the South African Rotax MAX Challenge National Championship and finishing runner-up at the Africa Open.

His regional campaign has been equally competitive, with four heat victories and several podium finishes keeping him in the championship fight throughout the season. Despite encountering challenges along the way, Alonzo has demonstrated the determination and racecraft that have established him as one of South Africa's promising young karting talents.

This weekend's return to Formula-K Raceway, which previously hosted the second regional round in May, presents one final opportunity to challenge for the title. However, the regional finale is only part of an exciting few weeks for the youngster. Following a late invitation, Alonzo will make his first appearance at the RMC Grand Finals, scheduled for 7–14 November at the Kartódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, Portugal.

"It's been a really exciting year learning and racing in Micro MAX. I would love to finish the regional season by winning another championship, but I know it won't be easy. I'm going to give it everything this weekend. I'm also very excited about Portugal and getting the chance to race against some of the best drivers in the world. Thank you to my family, Stretto Racing, OMP, ATS Motorsport Supplies and everyone who has supported me this year."

Often described as the "Olympics of Karting", the international event brings together leading Rotax competitors from around the world. Alonzo will represent South Africa in the Micro MAX category, marking another significant milestone in his young racing career.

For now, his immediate focus remains on Formula-K Raceway, where he will aim to close the championship gap and end his first Micro MAX regional season with the regional prize of all before turning his attention to the international stage.
