Campos Eyes Strong Killarney Weekend
Keegan Campos will head to Cape Town next weekend, looking to continue his strong run of form when the South African Touring Cars Championship reaches Killarney International Raceway for the penultimate round of the 2026 season.
The Fast Developments Racing driver missed the opening round of the championship at Killarney in March, leaving him with ground to make up from the outset. Since joining the campaign at Red Star Raceway, however, Campos has steadily worked his way into contention and heads back to the Cape for his first Killarney appearance of the season with plenty still to fight for.
Campos made an immediate impression on his return to competition at Red Star. After a difficult opening race, he responded superbly in the reverse-grid encounter to claim his first victory of the season.
His championship challenge continued to gather momentum at Zwartkops, where another strong performance included a podium finish, before Campos produced one of his best weekends of the season during the championship's first visit to Aldo Scribante Racetrack.
The Johannesburg driver qualified third before racing his Fast Developments-prepared BMW to second place in the opening encounter. Although an ambitious move around the outside of Turn 1 in Race 2 ended in a spin, Campos recovered to finish sixth and keep his championship ambitions moving forward.
When the championship returned to Aldo Scribante in August, Campos again proved a consistent front-running threat. Two runner-up finishes marked his strongest overall performance of the campaign and provided another important haul of championship points heading into the final two rounds.
The official Motorsport South Africa standings following Round 5 place Campos fifth in the championship on 85 points. Michael van Rooyen occupies fourth on 91, Jason Coetzee is third with 93, and Klayden Ensor-Smith holds second on 101, while Julian van der Watt leads on 125. Campos is therefore only six points from fourth place and eight from a top-three championship position.
With only Killarney and the season finale at Zwartkops remaining, the Cape Town weekend could play a significant role in determining Campos' final championship position. Having missed an entire round at the start of the season, his ability to remain firmly in contention reflects the competitiveness he and Fast Developments Racing have shown since joining the championship at Round 2.
The weekend begins on Friday with practice and qualifying, giving Campos and the team an important opportunity to establish a competitive setup around the fast, flowing Killarney layout. The main action follows on Saturday with two South African Touring Cars races.
Killarney presents a different challenge to the circuits Campos has raced at so far this season. Carrying speed through its faster sections while maintaining stability under braking will be important, particularly in qualifying where track position could prove crucial against a closely matched SATC field.
Campos will nevertheless arrive in Cape Town with confidence following his double runner-up performance at Aldo Scribante. The BMW has shown increasingly competitive pace during the latter half of the season, and another strong points haul could significantly change the complexion of the championship standings ahead of the Zwartkops finale.
Rather than focusing solely on the points situation, the immediate objective will be to extract the maximum from the Fast Developments Racing BMW throughout Friday's sessions and put Campos in the best possible position for Saturday's two races.
With the championship battle immediately ahead of him tightly packed, every position will matter.
