De Wet Ready to Convert Regional Pace into National Progress
Luhan de Wet will return to national Rotax action next weekend when the second round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge heads to Formula-K Raceway in Benoni, with the reigning national Micro MAX Champion continuing his rookie campaign in the fiercely contested Mini MAX class.
Racing under the TGR Junior Academy banner this season, where he forms part of a six-driver Mini MAX line-up, Luhan has had to adapt quickly to one of the most competitive categories in South African karting. The move from Micro MAX to Mini MAX has brought stronger competition, closer racing and a new set of challenges, but the OMP/Motorsport Fanatix™ ambassador has already shown encouraging progress in the early stages of the season.
The opening national round in Cape Town earlier this season marked Luhan’s first SARMC outing as a Mini MAX rookie. Competing at the Killarney Kart Circuit, he used the weekend as an important learning experience, steadily building confidence in the class while gaining valuable race mileage against a deep field of more experienced Mini MAX competitors. While the results did not fully reflect his potential, the weekend gave him and the team a clear direction as they continued to work on adapting his driving style, race craft and setup approach to the demands of the category.
That progress was further underlined a few weeks ago during the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship at Formula-K Raceway, where Luhan used the regional round as valuable preparation for the upcoming national event. Returning to familiar territory, he delivered a determined performance and finished third overall, giving him a timely confidence boost ahead of the SARMC’s visit to the Benoni circuit.
Formula-K is a venue where Luhan has enjoyed past success, particularly during his Micro MAX career, but this weekend will present a different challenge in Mini MAX machinery. With the national championship now heading into its second round, the focus will be on applying the lessons learned from Cape Town and converting his recent regional momentum into a stronger national showing.
“I am excited to race at Formula-K again,” said Luhan. “It is a track I know well, but Mini MAX is very competitive, so I know I will have to work hard from the first session. Cape Town taught me a lot, and the Northern Regions round helped me prepare better for this weekend. I want to keep improving, stay focused and give my best for the team.”
With a full grid of young talent expected, the Mini MAX battle is set to be one of the weekend’s standout categories. For Luhan, the objective will be clear: continue closing the gap, build on his rookie-season development, and put himself in contention as the national campaign gathers momentum.
