Max Boshoff Narrowly Misses Africa Open Victory in Junior MAX Step-Up
Max Boshoff delivered a standout performance at Zwartkops Kart Raceway this past weekend, finishing as runner-up in the Africa Open after narrowly missing out on the Junior MAX victory by just 0.314 seconds.
The result marked an impressive showing from the young Cape Town driver, who was competing in a Junior MAX kart for only the second time, having had just one previous outing in the class earlier this season at a WPMC regional event. Coming into the weekend, Max’s focus had largely been on ROK Cup competition, where he races in the OK-Junior category, making his rapid adaptation to the Rotax Junior MAX package all the more significant.
Having recently returned from a stint in the United Kingdom as part of the Champions of the Future Academy Programme, Max arrived at Zwartkops determined to make a strong impression on his first SARMC and Africa Open appearance as a Junior MAX driver. With several practice sessions on Thursday, qualifying and Heat 1 on Friday, and the balance of the national and Africa Open programme on Saturday, the weekend provided a demanding test of pace, racecraft, and consistency.
Max kicked off his weekend with a strong P2 in qualifying before going on to win the opening heat. A tougher second heat saw the Cape Town driver finish ninth, but he bounced back with a fourth-place result in Heat 3. His overall second-place finish across the heats secured him a front-row start for the winner-takes-all final.
Despite his limited seat time in the class, Max showed maturity beyond his experience level. Against a competitive Junior MAX field, he remained firmly in contention throughout the weekend and produced a determined drive in the Africa Open final, taking the fight all the way to the chequered flag.
In the end, the margin was agonisingly small, with Max crossing the line just 0.314 seconds short of victory. While the win narrowly eluded him, the runner-up finish underscored his ability to adapt quickly and compete at the front on unfamiliar machinery.
“It was a really good weekend and I’m happy with the progress we made,” said Max. “Junior MAX is still very new to me, so to be fighting for the Africa Open win and miss it by such a small margin gives me a lot of confidence. A big thank you to my family, team, and everyone who supports me.”
The result adds another strong chapter to Max’s growing 2026 campaign. With his main focus still centred on OK-Junior competition in the ROK Cup, his Zwartkops performance showed that he is capable of transferring his pace and racecraft across categories. Max will now head to Benoni later this week for the fifth and sixth national rounds of the ROK Cup Karting Championship, where he will look to build on his recent momentum.
For Max, the Africa Open runner-up finish was more than just a podium. It was a statement drive from one of South Africa’s exciting young karting talents, proving that even with limited Junior MAX experience, he can challenge for victory on one of the country’s biggest Rotax stages.
