Rookie De Wet Delivers Breakthrough Mini MAX Victory at FK
Luhan de Wet delivered one of the standout performances of his young Mini MAX career this past Sunday, walking away as the overall winner at the second round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge, hosted at Formula-K Raceway in Benoni.
The result marked a significant step forward for the double national and reigning Micro MAX Champion, who is contesting his rookie season in the highly competitive Mini MAX class. Racing under the TGR Junior Academy banner, Luhan showed maturity beyond his years as he converted determination, race craft and consistency into a memorable national victory.
The OMP and Motorsport Fanatix™ ambassador began the weekend slightly on the back foot, qualifying seventh in a tightly contested session where only a few tenths separated several of the leading contenders. While outright pace remained difficult to unlock at times over the weekend, Luhan never let that define his performance.
Instead, he relied on composure, intelligent race craft and pure tenacity.
In the opening heat, Luhan wasted little time getting himself into contention. Starting from seventh, he fought his way through the pack and delivered a determined drive to finish third, immediately putting himself in the overall podium conversation. It was a performance that highlighted his ability to remain calm in traffic and make progress when it mattered most.
The second heat saw Luhan continue his strong run. Starting from pole, he again found himself in a tough fight at the front of the Mini MAX field. Although he was unable to hold on for the win, he secured a valuable runner-up finish, adding another strong points haul to his weekend tally.
With the overall result still very much alive heading into the final heat, the Louis Leipodlt Primary student knew he had to deliver. Starting fifth, he produced his best performance of the weekend when it mattered most. A focused and determined drive saw him work his way to the front, take control of the race, and cross the line to claim the heat victory.
That win secured him the overall Mini MAX honours for the weekend, a major breakthrough in his first season in the class.
For Luhan, the result was more than just a win. It was proof that the double national champion is quickly adapting to the demands of Mini MAX racing, a category known for its depth, close margins and intense competition. While he may have been a few tenths off the ultimate pace at different stages of the weekend, his ability to maximise every opportunity proved decisive.
“This was a very special weekend for me,” said Luhan. “Mini MAX is a big step up, and I knew I had to fight hard in every race. We were not always the fastest, but I never gave up. I just focused on every lap, every move and every chance I had. To win overall on Sunday feels amazing, and I want to thank my team, my family, TGR Junior Academy, OMP and Motorsport Fanatix™ for all the support.”
The victory will serve as a major confidence boost for Luhan as the national championship heads into its next phase. With his first Mini MAX national win now secured, the young racer has firmly shown that he is not only adapting to the class, but also becoming a genuine contender.
After a weekend built on grit, consistency and fighting spirit, Luhan leaves Formula-K with silverware, momentum and renewed belief.
