Rotax National Titles Set for Zwartkops Showdown

The 2026 South African Rotax MAX Challenge reaches its climax this weekend as the country’s leading Rotax karters descend on Zwartkops Kart Raceway for the fourth and final national round of the season.

Widely regarded as the home of Rotax karting in South Africa, Zwartkops will host four championship heats before the 2026 national champions are crowned on Saturday afternoon.

Beyond the prestige of a South African title, a significant international prize is also at stake. In the Grand Finals-eligible categories, the national champions will join South Africa’s Africa Open qualifiers in forming Team South Africa for the 2026 Rotax MAX Challenge Grand Finals. Should an Africa Open ticket holder also secure the corresponding national title, the National Championship invitation passes to the runner-up.

With four races remaining, there is still plenty to play for, while the return to Zwartkops also provides a useful indication of who could be fighting for individual victories. The circuit hosted the previous national round and Africa Open in July, meaning several competitors arrive with proven form at the Pretoria venue.

Bambino

Tiyani Malabie heads into the finale as the Bambino championship leader after a consistently strong campaign that included a clean sweep of the three Formula K national heats.

His closest challengers include Yerhu Malabie and Melokhule Ndlovu, and both have already demonstrated that they can win at Zwartkops. Ndlovu claimed two victories when the championship last visited the circuit, while Yerhu Malabie won the remaining heat.

That previous Zwartkops form makes the trio the obvious drivers to watch, with Tiyani looking to convert his championship lead into a maiden national crown.

Micro MAX

Radhi Harris has been the benchmark in Micro MAX and arrives at the finale leading the standings.

Harris has been particularly impressive through the middle part of the national campaign, sweeping all three Formula K heats before repeating the feat when the championship visited Zwartkops in July.

Slater Smith remains a major threat after taking two wins during the Killarney opener, while Alonzo De Oliveira has been a regular front-runner throughout his rookie Micro MAX campaign. De Oliveira also arrives with encouraging recent form after winning the final heat of the Northern Regions round at Vereeniging.

Jordan Jurgens and Rofhiwa Ndwambi have also frequently featured near the front, but Harris remains the driver the field will need to beat on current national form.

Mini MAX

Mini MAX promises to be one of the weekend's most open categories.

Luke Du Toit leads the championship and has already demonstrated excellent Zwartkops form, winning two of the three national heats at the circuit in July.

Liam Wharton has been one of the season’s most consistent challengers and was a double winner at Killarney, while Diego Antunes and Luhan De Wet both have national victories to their names from Formula K.

Ruhan Victor cannot be overlooked as a race-winning prospect either. The Capetonian won the middle heat during the previous Zwartkops national and has continued to show strong regional form.

With Du Toit, Wharton, Antunes, De Wet and Victor all proven winners during 2026, Mini MAX could produce four fiercely contested heats.

Junior MAX

Brodi Cooper Dowling carries the Junior MAX championship lead into Zwartkops after a campaign that has featured several national victories.

Declan Jurgens and Ronaldo Koen remain among the leading championship challengers, but predicting the individual race winners is considerably more difficult.

The last national visit to Zwartkops produced three different winners. Ruvan Maritz won the second heat and Keenan Du Plessis took the third, while Max Boshoff claimed the opening heat.

Boshoff will not participate in this round, removing one of the circuit’s proven front-runners from the Junior MAX field. His absence leaves Maritz, Du Plessis and championship leader Dowling among the leading contenders for race victories.

Rafael De Sousa has also tasted national victory this season and could feature in the battle at the front.

Junior MAX therefore has all the ingredients for one of the weekend’s most unpredictable battles.

Senior MAX

Sebastiano Human leads what has developed into an exceptionally competitive Senior MAX championship.

Human has been quick throughout the season and arrives in strong form after recently completing a clean sweep at a Western Province meeting at Killarney. He will, however, face no shortage of opposition at Zwartkops.

Kian Spies and Jordon Wadeley have kept themselves firmly in the championship conversation through consistent performances, while Caleb Moss is already a double national race winner this season.

Perhaps the most significant Zwartkops threat is Keagan Beaumont. He won two of the three national heats when the championship last raced at the Pretoria circuit, with Muhammad Wally taking the remaining victory.

With a large and competitive Senior MAX field expected, qualifying could prove especially important before four races in which several drivers have realistic winning prospects.

DD2

Charl Michael Visser has been the dominant force in DD2 and heads to the finale as the clear championship leader.

Visser has won eight of the nine national heats reflected in the championship standings supplied ahead of the finale, including all three races during the previous national visit to Zwartkops.

That record makes him the obvious favourite for race victories this weekend, but Jamie Smith, Matthew Wadeley, Dusan Radojevic and Shrien Naidoo have all shown the speed to remain in contention.

Jono Wilson is another driver capable of disrupting Visser’s run. Wilson is the only competitor to have beaten the championship leader to a national heat victory during the campaign to date.

Stopping Visser at Zwartkops will nevertheless require an exceptional weekend from his rivals.

DD2 Masters

Few categories offer a more intriguing form comparison than DD2 Masters.

Jonathan Pieterse arrives as the championship leader, with Jared Jordan and Justin Allison among those pursuing him.

Each of the leading contenders has enjoyed periods of dominance. Jordan won two heats at Killarney, Pieterse swept the Formula K round, while Allison was unbeatable across the three national heats at Zwartkops.

That makes Allison an obvious race-winning threat on the return to Pretoria, while Pieterse will be looking to protect his championship advantage and Jordan remains firmly in contention.

With four heats available, DD2 Masters could change complexion several times before the final chequered flag.

Four Heats to Decide the Champions

The build-up begins on Thursday, 27 August, with practice continuing through Friday. Qualifying and the opening championship heats are scheduled for Friday afternoon, setting the scene for the decisive final day.

Saturday will feature the remaining three heats in each class before the 2026 South African Rotax MAX Challenge national champions are crowned.

With championship titles, Grand Finals opportunities and individual race honours all on the line, Zwartkops is set to provide a fitting conclusion to the national Rotax season.
