VW’s Tait Turns Frustrating Friday into Solid Polo Cup Saturday at Zwartkops

Christopher Tait showed character and composure during Round 3 of the Astron Energy Polo Cup at Zwartkops Raceway, recovering from a frustrating start to the weekend to deliver a consistent and confidence-building Saturday for Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa.

The weekend began with a sense of déjà vu for the 2025 VW Rookie Champion, as gearbox issues that had already hampered him during the previous round at Red Star Raceway resurfaced during Friday practice. With limited running across the day, Tait was only able to complete 10 laps over three sessions, leaving him with little meaningful preparation ahead of the late-afternoon qualifying session.

With limited seat time and uncertainty around the car’s performance, Tait entered qualifying not knowing what to expect. However, a trouble-free session allowed him to set aside the earlier frustrations and focus on extracting what he could from the car. He went on to qualify ninth, placing himself inside the top ten ahead of Saturday’s three races.

What followed was a complete turnaround.

Putting the disappointment of Friday behind him, the Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa driver approached race day with renewed focus. Across all three races, Tait delivered consistent performances, finishing seventh on each occasion. More importantly, it marked the first time he felt truly comfortable in the car, with his confidence growing with every lap around the 2.4 km Pretoria circuit.

For a driver still in his rookie season in the highly competitive Astron Energy Polo Cup field, the progress was significant. With small margins separating much of the grid, Tait’s ability to reset after a difficult Friday and produce three measured race performances underlined both his maturity and his growing understanding of the Polo Cup car.

The combined results saw the factory-backed driver finish seventh overall for the round, capping off a solid Saturday after what had initially looked like a challenging weekend.

“Friday was really frustrating, especially with the same gearbox issues we had at Red Star coming back again,” said Tait. “With only 10 laps completed before qualifying, I honestly did not know what to expect. But once we got through qualifying and the car felt better, I just focused on doing my job on Saturday. It was the first time I really felt comfortable in the car, and with every lap my confidence grew. To finish seventh in all three races and seventh overall is a big positive for us, especially after the way the weekend started.”

Tait also paid tribute to the support behind his campaign.

“A big thank you must go to Volkswagen Motorsport South Africa for all their work and support throughout the weekend, especially after the challenges we had on Friday. I also want to thank my sponsors, my family, and everyone who continues to back me. Their support makes a massive difference, and we will keep working hard to build on this result.”

With Round 3 now complete, Tait leaves Zwartkops with valuable mileage, improved confidence, and another solid top-ten result as he continues to establish himself in one of South Africa’s most competitive one-make racing categories.
