Record-Breaking Run Propels Steyn to African Open Glory
Adriaan Steyn delivered the most significant performance of his career to date by claiming the 2025 Rotax African Open Micro MAX title in a dramatic winner-takes-all final at Zwartkops Kart Raceway yesterday. The Centurion-based driver not only secured victory in a hotly-contested showdown with rival Luhan De Wet but also etched his name into the history books by setting a new lap record around the famed Pretoria circuit.
From the outset, the weekend had all the hallmarks of a classic. Adriaan set the tone on Friday afternoon by storming to pole position, narrowly edging out his rival by just 0.128s. Saturday's two qualifying heats saw the title favourites go toe-to-toe from the onset, where Adriaan finished as runner-up in both Pre-Final heats to secure a front row start for the final.
Adriaan had quietly been building momentum and saving his best for last. Lining up in second on the grid for the final, Adriaan knew that only a win would secure the coveted African Open title. What followed was a masterclass in driving. Despite trailing Luhan for the majority of the race, Adriaan pounced in the closing laps and snatched the lead on Lap 10. Losing the lead a few corners later and with only a lap remaining, Adriaan again tucked in behind his opponent before making the race-winning pass at the final turn. Taking the chequered flag, he also recorded a new circuit record of 46.193 seconds.
"What a race! I had to give it absolutely everything," said an elated Steyn. "Luhan was incredibly quick all weekend, but I just kept pushing and knew I had one shot in the final. To take the win and break the lap record makes it even more special."
This triumph marks a significant milestone in Adriaan's career. A former national Bambino Champion, he now adds an African Open title to his growing resume, placing him firmly among South Africa's top junior karting talents.
Adriaan is proudly supported by Greensky, Q4 Fuels, and Sparco, whose unwavering backing continues to fuel his rise through the karting ranks.
