Campos Claims Aldo Honours With Double Runner-Up Finish
Keegan Campos delivered an outstandingly consistent performance at Aldo Scribante Racetrack, taking two runner-up finishes during the fifth round of the South African Touring Cars Championship.
Returning to the Gqeberha circuit following the championship’s previous visit, Campos was determined to build on the pace he had shown earlier in the season. The Johannesburg driver made a strong start by qualifying his Fast Developments-prepared BMW third for Saturday’s opening race.
Campos remained among the front-runners throughout the 10-lap contest and converted his second-row start into an excellent second place. He crossed the line less than half a second behind race winner Julian van der Watt.
The partially reversed grid placed Campos fifth for Race 2, making the challenge tougher. He worked his way through the group ahead and moved into second place, putting himself in contention for victory during the closing stages.
Despite applying pressure at the front, Campos narrowly missed out and finished less than half a second behind Jason Coetzee. His pace was underlined by recording the fastest lap of the race.
“It was a really positive weekend for us. The car was competitive in both races, and to come away with two second places and the fastest lap in Race 2 shows the progress we have made. We came very close to winning, but the consistency and points are important. A big thank you to the team, our partners and everyone who continues to support us. We will take this momentum into the next round and keep pushing,” Campos said.
The two runner-up finishes completed a highly successful weekend for the Campos Transport-backed driver and gave him the strongest combined result among the leading contenders.
It was also a significant turnaround from the championship’s previous visit to Aldo Scribante, where Campos finished second in the opening race before a spin compromised his second outing. This time, he delivered two clean performances and turned his speed into two valuable results.
With the championship approaching its decisive stages, Campos leaves the Eastern Cape with renewed momentum following one of his most complete performances of the season. Killarney International Raceway will see the premier saloon car championship return for the penultimate round over 18-19 September.
