Emma-Rose battles back after difficult Le Mans final
South Africa's Emma-Rose Dowling completed a demanding weekend at the IAME Ladies Cup in Le Mans, France, from 8–11 October, recovering from an opening-lap setback to finish 19th in Sunday's X30 Lady final.
The Johannesburg teenager, representing the Toyota Gazoo Racing Academy and competing with Premium Karting, was among 33 competitors entered for the international event, which attracted female karters from Europe and further afield.
Dowling, the only representative from Africa, showed encouraging pace early on, but changing weather conditions complicated her weekend. Rain left the circuit wet for Friday's qualifying session, where she secured 20th position. As the track began drying for the qualifying heats, the challenge shifted to finding the right balance and making progress through a competitive field.
Her opening heat proved difficult. A five-second penalty following contact with another competitor contributed to a 25th-place classification. However, she responded strongly in the second heat, climbing from 20th on the grid to finish 10th despite another five-second penalty, this time for an infringement on the formation lap.
The third heat brought further progress, with Dowling finishing 14th. Those results placed her 17th in the intermediate classification heading into Saturday evening's Super Heat, which was contested under floodlights.
A difficult opening lap in the Super Heat left the South African with ground to recover. She eventually finished 19th, which also became her starting position for Sunday's 18-lap final.
Unfortunately, her hopes of a stronger result suffered a major setback almost immediately. Having started 19th, Dowling dropped to 30th by the completion of the opening lap, leaving her with considerable work to do.
Rather than allowing the setback to dictate her race, she began working her way back through the field. By the fifth lap, she had recovered to 24th and continued making progress as the race developed. She reached 20th in the closing stages before gaining another position to take the chequered flag in 19th, recovering 11 places from her opening-lap position.
Although the final classification fell short of Dowling's ambitions, her recovery was a positive response to a disappointing start. The weekend added another international outing to her 2026 campaign, which has also included a third-place championship finish in the British Champions of the Future Academy's OK-N Senior category.
For Dowling, Le Mans offered another chance to compete against an international field, adapt to changing conditions, and gain further experience as her motorsport career continues.
