Goosen Strengthens Championship Credentials at Zwartkops

Jayden Goosen continued to underline his growing status as one of the standout rookies in the Astron Energy Polo Cup after another competitive outing during Round 3 of the championship at Zwartkops Raceway.

Competing at the home of the National Extreme Festival, the AA South Africa-backed teenager arrived at the tight and technical 2,4 km Pretoria circuit determined to build on his impressive start to the season. Although still in his debut Polo Cup campaign, Goosen was no stranger to Zwartkops, and he wasted little time settling into the weekend.

After a strong run through practice and qualifying, the Lee Thompson Racing driver progressed into the Superpole shootout for the top six. There, he delivered when it mattered, securing third on the grid for Saturday’s opening race and placing himself firmly among the front-runners in one of South Africa’s most competitive one-make championships.

Race 1 saw Goosen come under immediate pressure as he lost a position on the opening lap. However, showing the composure and race craft that have quickly made him a genuine championship contender, he responded well and fought back to reclaim the place. His determined drive was rewarded with another podium finish, further strengthening his position in the early-season title battle.

Eager to improve on that performance, Goosen was again in the thick of the action in Race 2. A difficult opening lap saw him lose several positions and drop down the order to tenth, leaving him with plenty of work to do. What followed was one of the stronger recovery drives of the race as he battled his way back through the field to take the chequered flag in sixth. It was a performance that once again highlighted his ability to stay composed under pressure and extract results even when a race does not initially unfold in his favour.

The final race of the weekend followed a similar pattern. After slipping back to sixth in the early stages, Goosen once again had to fight his way forward in the fiercely contested Polo Cup pack. With the racing as close and uncompromising as ever, he produced another measured drive to recover to fourth, narrowly missing out on a second podium of the weekend.

While the weekend brought moments of frustration, particularly with the opening-lap setbacks in the latter two races, Goosen’s overall performance at Zwartkops reinforced his pace, maturity and consistency. A podium, a strong recovery from tenth to sixth, and a fourth-place finish ensured another valuable points haul for the rookie.

For Goosen, Round 3 proved that they have the speed to qualify at the sharp end, the race craft to fight back through the field, and the consistency required to remain firmly in the championship conversation as the season progresses.
