Perfect Preparation: Goosen Wins on Astron Energy Polo Cup Debut

Pretoria’s rising talent Jayden Goosen marked his national circuit racing debut this past weekend in the final round of the Astron Energy Polo Cup at Zwartkops Raceway, using the opportunity as crucial preparation ahead of his first full campaign in the 2026 season.

Having spent the past two seasons sharpening his racecraft in regional competition following a strong karting career, Jayden’s step up to the national level was both calculated and ambitious. Competing at his home circuit added extra motivation. However, the weekend came with unique restrictions designed to prevent any interference with the ongoing championship battles, including being ineligible for the SuperPole shootout that decides the top six grid spots. Despite this handicap, Goosen immediately showcased his pace and composure.

In Qualifying, he set the seventh-fastest time overall, four-tenths off pole, a statement performance for a first-time entrant against South Africa’s most competitive cup field.

Starting seventh on the grid for Race 1, Jayden kept his nose clean through the opening laps, showing maturity and control beyond his years. A consistent run saw him maintain contact with the lead pack, ultimately finishing fifth overall, just over three seconds off the race winner. Notably, he recorded the fastest lap of the race, a blistering 1:11.259, underlining his natural speed and adaptability in national competition.

Race 2 delivered an even stronger performance. Starting from pole position on the Race 2 grid (courtesy of his Race 1 fastest lap), Jayden made the most of his front-row opportunity. Controlling the race from the outset, he maintained his composure under pressure to take a lights-to-flag victory, setting a best lap of 1:11.587 and crossing the line 3.380 seconds clear of his nearest rival.

His consistent pace across both races secured him overall victory for the weekend, by 0.001 seconds, marking a sensational debut at the national level.

Reflecting on the weekend, Jayden expressed his gratitude:

“It was an unbelievable experience racing among the country’s best. We came here to learn, and to come away with a win, and the overall result is more than I could’ve hoped for. Huge thanks to my team and sponsors for believing in me. This weekend gave us massive confidence for 2026.”

Supported by AA Certified Pre-Owned Cars, N4 Autocraft, Arrie Nel Pharmacy Group, Adlem Auto, ATS Motorsport Supplies, and OMP Racing, and under the guidance of Lee Thompson Racing, Jayden’s Zwartkops debut was the perfect launchpad for what promises to be an exciting 2026 campaign.
