Rookie De Oliviera Stamps Authority on Micro MAX Debut
Alonzo de Oliveira’s transition from Bambino to Micro MAX could hardly have been scripted better. The reigning National, African and Northern Regions Bambino Champion arrived at Zwartkops Kart Raceway as one of the least experienced drivers in the class, but left Round 1 of the 2026 Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship as the Micro MAX overall winner.
Qualifying set the tone. Alonzo placed his Parolin second on the grid, an immediate statement of intent in a competitive field of seasoned Micro MAX campaigners.
Heat 1 delivered the first glimpse of the fight within the young Stretto Racing driver. In a race defined by constant position changes at the front, Alonzo edged out Radhi Harris by just 0.014 seconds to secure victory. It was a calculated, mature drive, controlled aggression under warm, dry Gauteng conditions. Heat 2 saw Radhi strike back, but Alonzo remained firmly in contention. He crossed the line second, banking critical championship points and proving his pace was no fluke.
Then came the weather shift. As afternoon clouds gathered and rain fell ahead of the final heat, the circuit transformed. Grip levels changed corner by corner, demanding precision and adaptability. In wet conditions, Alonzo rose to the occasion. After Radhi led the opening laps, Alonzo took control and drove to victory in the final heat, winning by more than six seconds in a commanding wet-weather performance. Across the three heats, his 35-32-35 scoreline secured him 102 points and the overall Round 1 win .
For a rookie in Micro MAX, the weekend underlined more than just raw speed. It highlighted racecraft, composure under pressure, and the ability to adapt to changing track evolution, from dry midday heat to late-afternoon rain. While some competitors carried greater class experience into 2026, Alonzo proved that progression through the ranks has equipped him with the technical maturity required at this level. It is not the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog.
“This was a big step for me moving into Micro MAX,” said Alonzo. “The racing is tough and the drivers are strong, but I felt comfortable in the kart. When the rain came, we stayed focused and made the right decisions. I’m proud of how we handled the weekend.”
The 2026 season has only just begun, but the message is clear: Alonzo’s Bambino dominance was no coincidence. His Micro MAX campaign is already gathering momentum, and his rivals now know that the 2025 National Bambino Champion has carried both his speed and his fighting spirit into the next chapter of his career.
