De Wet Secures Rookie Mini MAX Podium Pace at Zwartkops

Luhan de Wet launched his 2026 MSA Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship campaign with a composed and competitive performance at Zwartkops Kart Raceway, stepping up as a rookie in the fiercely contested Mini MAX category. Luhan, the reigning National Micro MAX Champion, is an official OMP ambassador and proud member of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy, and immediately demonstrated that he belongs at the sharp end of the grid.

Under dry, scattered cloud conditions, Luhan delivered an impressive qualifying performance, securing second on the grid just 0.200 seconds off pole position. The narrow margin highlighted both the field's competitiveness and Luhan’s seamless transition into Mini MAX machinery.

Starting from the front row placed him in prime contention from the outset. Heat 1 was run in dry conditions, and Luhan converted his front-row start into a strong result. After 12 laps of intense racing, he crossed the line as runner-up. His best lap of 46.109 seconds kept him firmly in the leading battle throughout the heat. The result marked a confident start to his rookie Mini MAX season and confirmed his early pace.

The weather turned dramatically for Heat 2, with rain soaking the circuit and transforming the track into a low-grip challenge. In wet conditions, Luhan completed 10 laps to finish 11th. Multiple incidents and the intensity of the rain disrupted the rhythm across the field, demanding adaptability and precision. For a rookie stepping up a category, the race served as a valuable learning opportunity in race management under pressure.

The final heat returned to dry conditions but remained intense. Over eight laps, Luhan finished in 11th position in a race influenced by penalties for several front-runners. While the final two heats did not yield the results the team had hoped for, it underlined the competitiveness of the class and the fine margins separating the top dozen drivers.

Over the weekend, Luhan demonstrated his class, qualifying on the front row and securing a strong opening-heat result on debut. As the reigning National Micro MAX Champion, he entered 2026 with expectations, and his performance confirmed that he is already a factor in the championship fight.

Backed by the Toyota Gazoo Racing Junior Academy and representing OMP as an official brand ambassador, Luhan continues to build momentum in his development pathway.

The results at Zwartkops reflect a rookie season built on pace and progression. With further rounds ahead, Luhan’s upward trajectory in Mini MAX is firmly underway.
