Scheepers Extends Championship Lead at Zwartkops

Hannes Scheepers strengthened his grip on the 2026 Astron Energy Polo Cup championship with an overall victory at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, 17 October. A race win and a runner-up finish saw the Dainfern Dental Studio-backed driver extend his championship lead with just one round remaining.

Competing in the penultimate round of the championship, held as part of the National Extreme Festival, Scheepers produced another consistent performance in a closely contested Polo Cup field.

Friday's practice sessions provided a positive start to the weekend. Scheepers was third fastest in the opening session before topping Practice 2 and recording the third-fastest time in the final session. He carried that pace into qualifying, finishing third in the opening session before securing second place in Superpole to earn a front-row start for Saturday's opening race.

Starting alongside pole-sitter Christopher Tait, Scheepers converted his front-row position into victory in Race 1. The championship leader completed the ten-lap contest ahead of Jayden Goosen, with Mauro Da Luz taking third, collecting valuable championship points in the process.

With the Race 2 grid determined by each driver's fastest lap from the opening race, Scheepers lined up third behind Da Luz and Shiren Rajpaul.

The second ten-lap encounter saw Da Luz claim victory, with Scheepers advancing to second place. He finished just 0.707 seconds behind the race winner, while Rajpaul completed the podium.

Scheepers' first and second-place finishes were enough to secure the overall round victory, edging Da Luz by just 0.977 seconds across the two races.

More importantly, the result allowed Scheepers to extend his advantage at the top of the championship standings. His Zwartkops performance added another race victory and overall round win to his 2026 campaign, putting him in a stronger position heading into the championship finale.
