Scheepers Targets Maiden Polo Cup Crown at Zwartkops
Astron Energy Polo Cup championship leader Hannes Scheepers heads to Zwartkops Raceway this weekend, 16–17 October, with an opportunity to secure his maiden national title. The Worx Motorsport SA driver has enjoyed an impressive 2026 campaign, claiming seven race victories from eleven starts and establishing a 26-point advantage over his nearest championship rival.
The Dainfern dentist arrives at the penultimate round of the championship with 86 points still available across the remaining two rounds. Scheepers is in a strong position, although the championship is far from settled.
Scheepers began his season in commanding fashion, taking pole position and both race victories at Killarney International Raceway in March. He followed that performance with another double victory at Red Star Raceway in April, extending his unbeaten start to four consecutive wins.
When the championship visited Zwartkops in May, Scheepers continued his winning form by claiming the opening two races of the weekend. His six-race winning streak eventually ended in the third heat, when Smalberger claimed victory, with Scheepers finishing third.
The championship leader returned to the top step of the podium at Aldo Scribante Raceway in June, winning the second race after finishing runner-up in the opening heat. His seventh victory of the season further strengthened his position at the head of the standings.
However, his second visit to Aldo Scribante in August proved more challenging, where Scheepers had to settle for fifth and third. Despite missing out on another win, he collected valuable championship points to preserve his advantage.
Beyond his seven victories, Scheepers has recorded one qualifying pole-position bonus and three fastest race laps this season. His pole came at the opening round at Killarney, while his fastest laps were recorded in the second race at Killarney, the opening race at Zwartkops in May and the second race at Aldo Scribante in June.
His current championship position follows a steady progression through South African circuit racing. After winning the VW Challenge Class B title in 2022, Scheepers stepped into the highly competitive Polo Cup, gradually establishing himself among the leading contenders. He secured his maiden Polo Cup victory towards the end of the 2025 season, laying the foundation for a successful 2026 campaign.
This weekend's return to Zwartkops presents a familiar challenge for Scheepers and his Worx Motorsport SA team. The 2.4-kilometre circuit features eight corners, combining fast changes of direction with demanding braking zones and limited opportunities to recover lost time. Having already secured two race wins at the venue earlier this year, Scheepers will be looking to repeat that performance when it matters most.
The championship calendar has also changed significantly. The cancelled September round at Killarney was originally scheduled to be the penultimate meeting, with Zwartkops hosting the season finale. However, the addition of a replacement round at Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit on 14 November means that this weekend's races will now be the second-to-last round.
With a maximum of 43 points available at the Kyalami finale under the current two-race format, Scheepers could still secure the championship at Zwartkops if he builds an unassailable points advantage over his rivals. For Scheepers, the immediate priority will be another strong qualifying performance on Friday, followed by two competitive races on Saturday. After a season in which he has led the championship from the opening round, he now has an opportunity to turn his seven victories and consistent points finishes into his first Astron Energy Polo Cup national championship.
Scheepers will take to the circuit on Friday for the first of three practice sessions before a late-afternoon qualifying session, and SuperPole will determine Saturday’s opening race grid positions. A second race will round out the weekend.
