Van Rooyen Ends 2026 With Zwartkops Overall Victory

Michael van Rooyen brought his 2026 South African Touring Cars (SATC) Championship campaign to a positive conclusion at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday, 17 October, claiming the overall honours at the final round of the National Extreme Festival.

The Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa (TGRSA) driver secured third- and second-place finishes in the day's two races, with his combined race times earning him the overall victory ahead of Keegan Campos and Julian van der Watt.

Having entered the final round still searching for his first individual race win of the season, Van Rooyen was determined to finish the campaign strongly. Although that elusive race victory remained out of reach, the overall result was a welcome reward for the progress made throughout the year.

Saturday morning's closely contested qualifying session saw Van Rooyen secure fifth on the grid in his Toyota Corolla. With little separating the leading competitors, the defending champion faced a challenging opening race.

Van Rooyen made a strong start to his final race day of the season, moving forward from fifth to secure third place in Race 1. Campos claimed the victory ahead of fellow TGRSA driver Jason Coetzee, while Van Rooyen completed the podium.

Starting fourth in the reverse-grid second race, Van Rooyen again worked his way into podium contention. He finished second behind Van der Watt, with Campos taking third. Just over half a second separated Van Rooyen from the race winner at the chequered flag.

The combination of his two performances proved sufficient to secure the overall honours, with Van Rooyen finishing ahead of Campos by just 0.630 seconds on aggregate time.

The result provided an encouraging conclusion to a season in which Van Rooyen and the TGRSA team worked consistently to improve the Toyota Corolla's competitiveness. Although outright victories proved difficult to secure, the team's progress over the latter stages of the championship provided a positive foundation for the future.

For Van Rooyen, the Zwartkops result was an opportunity to end a demanding campaign on a high, rewarding the team's continued efforts while bringing his 2026 racing season to a close.
