Keegan Campos brought his 2026 South African Touring Cars (SATC) Championship campaign to a close with a race victory, two podium finishes and second place overall at the final round of the National Extreme Festival, held at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday.
The Johannesburg driver endured a difficult start to the weekend after an engine issue disrupted Friday's practice sessions. Despite limited track time, Campos and his Fast Developments-prepared BMW 1 Series bounced back on Saturday, turning what initially looked like a frustrating season finale into one of his strongest performances of the year.
Campos' troubles began during the opening practice session when an engine problem forced him back into the pits. He subsequently missed the second session while the team worked to resolve the issue. Although he returned for the final practice session, he completed just one recorded lap before heading back to the pit lane.
With little opportunity to assess the car's performance, Campos faced Saturday morning's qualifying session with limited preparation. However, any concerns about his competitiveness were soon put to rest.
The Veloce Automobili and Carello Auto-backed driver immediately made his intentions clear, securing pole position ahead of Jason Coetzee and KC Ensor-Smith. Remarkably, Campos achieved the result after just four laps, a welcome reward for the team's efforts after Friday's setbacks.
Starting the opening 10-lap race from pole position, Campos made the most of his front-row advantage. He held the lead through the opening corners and maintained his position as Coetzee applied pressure from behind.
With little separating the front runners, Campos delivered a composed drive, controlling the pace and keeping his challengers at bay. He also recorded the fastest lap of the race before crossing the finish line ahead of Coetzee, with Michael van Rooyen completing the podium.
The victory marked Campos' second race win of the season, adding to his earlier success at Red Star Raceway, where he claimed victory in the reverse-grid race.
The afternoon's second race presented a different challenge, with the reverse-grid format placing Campos sixth on the starting grid.
A strong opening lap saw him work his way into third position behind Julian van der Watt and Van Rooyen. Despite the close competition, Campos maintained his position throughout the 11-lap contest, eventually taking the chequered flag in third place to secure his second podium finish of the day.
His victory and third-place finish earned him second place in the overall classification, just 0.630 seconds behind Van Rooyen, with Van der Watt completing the overall podium.
It was a satisfying conclusion to a campaign that had delivered both encouraging results and its share of frustrations. Having missed the opening round at Killarney, Campos announced his return with victory at Red Star Raceway before adding podium finishes at Zwartkops and Aldo Scribante Racetrack during the season.
While the year had not always gone according to plan, the final weekend demonstrated both the pace of the BMW and the determination of Campos and his team. Recovering from Friday's mechanical difficulties to claim pole position, a race victory and an overall podium was a fitting way to conclude his 2026 campaign.
Campos extends his appreciation to his team, sponsors and supporters for their continued backing throughout the season.
