Jayden Goosen returned to the podium at Zwartkops Raceway this past weekend, claiming a runner-up finish in the opening race of the penultimate round of the 2026 Astron Energy Polo Cup Championship. The Pretoria teenager showed impressive pace throughout the weekend, eventually finishing fifth overall as the championship heads towards its November finale at Kyalami.
After a season marked by several frustrating setbacks, Goosen arrived at his home circuit determined to turn his pace into results. The AA-backed driver wasted little time establishing himself among the front-runners, topping Friday's opening practice session before recording the second-fastest time in Practice 2. He returned to the top of the timesheets in the final practice session, providing a strong indication of his potential ahead of qualifying.
Goosen progressed comfortably into the six-driver Superpole Shootout after setting the sixth-fastest time in the initial qualifying session. With just one flying lap available in Superpole, he delivered another competitive performance to secure third position on the grid for Saturday's opening race.
Starting from the second row, Goosen made the most of his opportunity in Race 1, moving into second position behind championship leader Hannes Scheepers. Driving with confidence and consistency, he maintained his position throughout the ten-lap contest, crossing the finish line behind the race winner to claim a well-deserved podium finish.
The result was a welcome reward for Goosen and his team, particularly after the misfortune that has repeatedly affected their campaign this season. His performance also underlined the competitiveness he has demonstrated throughout the year, even when the results have not always reflected his potential.
With the grid for Race 2 determined by each driver's fastest lap in the opening race, Goosen lined up fifth for the afternoon's final contest. Although he remained competitive, he couldn't repeat his earlier podium performance, eventually crossing the finish line in eighth.
His combined results earned him fifth overall for the weekend, with Scheepers taking the overall victory ahead of Mauro Da Luz and Roshaan Goodman.
While the second race kept Goosen from a stronger overall result, his weekend performance offered plenty of encouragement. Leading two practice sessions, qualifying third in Superpole, and securing a runner-up finish showed the young driver has the pace to challenge at the front of the closely contested Polo Cup field.
With Zwartkops now behind him, Goosen turns his attention to the final round of the championship, scheduled for Kyalami in November. Having claimed victory at the circuit during his wildcard appearance at the end of 2025, he will be hoping to draw on that experience and finish his 2026 campaign on a positive note.
