Alonzo Eyes Northern Regions Championship Lead at GT Raceway
Alonzo De Oliveira heads to GT Raceway in Vereeniging this weekend with the Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship lead firmly within reach as the series stages its third round of the season. The Stretto Racing driver, OMP ambassador and Motorsport Fanatix™ brand ambassador trails the championship leader by only three points following a consistently competitive start to his rookie Micro MAX campaign.
Alonzo has secured two victories and two further podium finishes across the opening two rounds, establishing himself as one of the championship’s leading contenders despite stepping into the highly competitive Micro MAX category at the beginning of the year. This weekend will mark Alonzo’s first visit to the Vereeniging circuit this season. The compact GT Raceway layout combines fast, flowing sections with several tighter and more technical corners, placing a premium on precision, momentum and a well-balanced kart.
With limited room for error and the leading drivers expected to be closely matched, qualifying and the opening laps of each heat could prove particularly important. Alonzo nevertheless arrives in Vereeniging encouraged by his early-season form and determined to maintain the consistency that has placed him within striking distance of the championship lead.
“We have had a very good start to the regional championship, and being only three points behind means everything is still very close,” said Alonzo. “GT Raceway is a circuit where you need to be accurate and carry good speed through every section, so I am looking forward to the challenge. My goal is to fight for more victories, score as many points as possible and hopefully leave the weekend leading the championship. Although the championship standings will inevitably form part of the weekend’s narrative, Alonzo’s immediate focus will remain on delivering a clean and competitive performance across qualifying and all three heats.
Another strong points haul could see the young racer take control of the Northern Regions title fight as the championship moves into the second half of its season.
