De Oliveira Steps Up in Style with Top-Five Finish on Micro MAX Debut
OMP and Motorsport Fanatix™ brand ambassador Alonzo De Oliveira marked an important milestone in his karting career as he made his highly anticipated Micro MAX debut at the opening round of the South African Rotax MAX Challenge (SARMC) at the Killarney Kart Circuit co-located at Killarney International Raceway.
Returning to Cape Town for the first time since securing an extraordinary Bambino triple crown, Alonzo faced a new level of competition. The step up to Micro MAX introduced greater speed and a deeper, more experienced field, yet the Johannesburg youngster immediately showed he belonged at the front of the grid.
Alonzo’s weekend began with a strong qualifying performance, securing fifth position, in a tightly contested session dominated by the local drivers. From there, the Stretto Racing driver delivered a consistent set of race results across the three heats. He finished a strong fifth in Heat 1, before a more challenging second heat saw him cross the finish line in seventh. He capped off the weekend with another solid performance to finish fifth in the final heat. Those results earned him fifth overall for the round, a highly credible outcome in his first outing in the class against seasoned Micro MAX competitors.
Importantly, his progression across the heats highlighted his adaptability, showing clear signs of growth as he transitioned into the faster category. Rather than overreaching, he focused on consistency and race management, key attributes that will serve him well over the course of the championship.
Reflecting on his debut weekend, Alonzo remained both realistic and encouraged by the performance:
"It’s a big step moving into Micro MAX, and I knew it would be tough racing against drivers with more experience. I’m really happy with how we approached the weekend. Qualifying inside the top five and finishing fifth overall gives us a strong base to build from. We learned a lot, and I’m confident we’ll keep improving as the season goes on. A big thank you to my team and sponsors for their support."
With valuable race mileage now under his belt, Alonzo leaves Killarney having firmly established himself inside the top five in his debut appearance. As the season progresses, his trajectory suggests that he will increasingly challenge the front-runners.
Having already proven himself as a champion in Bambino, this new Micro MAX campaign is underway, and it is already shaping up to be another compelling chapter in his development.
