Rookie De Wet Shows Promise in Challenging Mini MAX National Opener
Luhan de Wet, the reigning Micro MAX national champion and OMP/Motorsport Fanatix™ ambassador, made his leap into the Mini MAX class during his national debut at Killarney Kart Circuit. It was an exciting opportunity for him to compete against a large 25-kart field that included numerous Cape Town locals, who had the home advantage and plenty of experience in the class. This transition represents a significant milestone in Luhan’s racing journey, moving into a faster category and facing off against seasoned drivers.
The weekend kicked off with a tightly contested qualifying session, where Luhan secured 8th on the grid. Although this left him with a bit of work to do, it set the stage for him to make a comeback in the heats. In Heat 1, he put on a fantastic performance, running as high as fifth before a last lap incident saw him drop down the order to finish 10th.
Heat 2 was a different story, as Luhan and another competitor tangled on the opening lap demoting him to the back of the field, where he would stay for the remainder of the race. To add insult to injury, the Centurion driver was disqualified as he was deemed underweight at the scales.
In the final heat, he put in his best performance of the weekend finishing 11th after starting 23rd. Having found his rhythm and able to deliver a more controlled performance, Luhan narrowly missed out on a top -10 finish.
Throughout the three heats, it was clear that Luhan was progressing. His ability to break into the top ten early in the weekend, along with his consistent finishes, landed him 13th overall for the round. More importantly, it demonstrated that he was rapidly catching up to the more experienced racers, picking up crucial racecraft and building his confidence with every lap.
“It felt like a big step up this weekend, racing against drivers who know Killarney inside and out. We learned a lot in every session and kept improving. The results may not reflect everything, but we're definitely building towards something strong. I’m excited to see how we do at iDube Raceway,” Luhan reflected after the races.
With Round 1 in the books, all eyes are now on iDube Raceway on April 24-25. Luhan is eager to channel his growing confidence and experience into even better results as his Mini MAX campaign gains momentum.
