De Wet Impresses on Mini MAX Debut

The 2025 Northern Regions Rotax Kart Championship returned to Formula-K Raceway in Benoni this past weekend, where recently crowned national Micro MAX champion and Motorsport Fanatix™ ambassador, Luhan de Wet, made his long-awaited debut in the highly competitive Mini MAX class.

Taking to the grid alongside 16 experienced drivers, Luhan immediately showed he belonged in the category. Qualifying eighth, he positioned himself firmly in the midfield of the 17-kart field. Heat 1 saw him deliver a composed drive, crossing the line in sixth place, before backing it up with another strong seventh-place finish in Heat 2.

Unfortunately, Luhan’s promising debut was cut short in Heat 3. Following an opening lap incident, he was caught in an unavoidable incident that forced him and three other competitors out of the race. Despite the disappointment, his pace and racecraft across the opening heats confirmed his ability to adapt quickly to the increased speed and intensity of Mini MAX competition.

Reflecting on the step up, Luhan remained upbeat:

“It was a great experience to finally race in Mini MAX and measure myself against some of the best drivers. The first two races went really well, but sadly Heat 3 ended too soon. I’m happy with the progress we made, and I can’t wait to build on this in the next round.”

With his first taste of Mini MAX now behind him, Luhan leaves Formula-K with valuable experience, as he continues to buil on his preparations for his maiden Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals in Bahrain.
