Defending Champion, Van Rooyen, Targets Strong Start at Killarney SATC Season Opener
The 2026 South African Touring Cars Championship kicks off next weekend at Killarney International Raceway in Cape Town. For Michael van Rooyen, the opening round marks the result of months of preparation as he enters the new season representing Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa.
Killarney is one of the most demanding circuits in South Africa. Its fast layout and enthusiastic Western Cape crowd provide an ideal setting for the championship opener, with competitors eager to begin their campaigns strongly.
The circuit has been a productive venue for Michael in recent seasons. Since 2024, when the Global Touring Cars (GTC) Championship became the South African Touring Cars (SATC) Championship, he has scored six podium finishes at Killarney, including five runner-up results. Michael’s only win at the circuit came in 2021 during the GTC Championship.
As the new season approaches, Michael is focused on building momentum from the opening round.
“The off-season has been about preparation and making sure everything is in place for the start of the championship. Killarney is always a fantastic venue to begin the season, and I’m excited to get back on the grid representing Toyota Gazoo Racing South Africa. The goal is to start the year strongly and build from there.”
The 2026 SATC season is expected to be highly competitive, featuring experienced drivers, former champions, and emerging talent competing across seven rounds at South Africa’s most iconic circuits. With intense racing expected from the start, Michael aims to turn his strong Killarney record into another victory as the championship begins.
Track action at Killarney International Raceway begins Friday with practice, followed by qualifying and the opening races on Saturday.
