Gearbox Woes Deny Mikel Potential Victory while Kent Impresses on Debut
Corsa dei Gemelli continued their strong run of form in the Investchem MSA4 Championship at Red Star Raceway yesterday, showing both promise and perseverance as the season heads into its final stretch.
It was another standout qualifying session for Mikel Bezuidenhout, who stormed to his third successive pole position, reaffirming his title-contending pace, edging out championship leader KC Ensor-Smith. However, the weekend would deliver mixed fortunes. A sudden gearbox issue on the opening lap of Race 1 saw Mikel drop from pole to fourth place almost immediately. Refusing to give up, the 17-year-old fought his way back into podium contention, eventually salvaging third place in a gritty drive.
“It’s so disappointing,” Mikel admitted afterwards. “We had the pace to fight for the win, but these things happen in racing. The important thing is that we’re still in the hunt.”
In Race 2, Mikel once again showcased his resilience, claiming his fourth race victory and collecting valuable points. His consistency has kept him firmly in contention for the championship heading into the final round in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, Kent Swartz made a sensational debut for the team, standing in for Kian Spies, and finished sixth and fifth across the two races, an impressive showing for the young driver who adapted quickly to single-seater machinery. His performances highlighted both his composure and natural racecraft, drawing praise from within the paddock.
With one round remaining, Corsa dei Gemelli leaves Red Star Raceway encouraged and determined, setting the stage for a thrilling championship finale, one where the title remains well within reach.
The team extends its gratitude to its valued partners, Huawei Mobile South Africa, MTN CosmoNet, and Mix 93.8 FM, for their continued support in powering this exciting campaign.
The final round is set for a return to Zwartkops Raceway on 24-25 October.
