Goosen Targets Strong Zwartkops Polo Cup Return

Pretoria teenager Jayden Goosen returns to familiar territory next weekend when the Astron Energy Polo Cup Championship heads to Zwartkops Raceway for Round 6 on Saturday, 17 October. The circuit has provided some of his most memorable moments in the category, and he will be hoping that a return to home ground brings a change in fortune.

Originally scheduled as the championship finale, the Zwartkops meeting will now serve as the penultimate round following the addition of Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit to the calendar this week. The revised schedule follows the cancellation of September's Killarney round after the tragic incident during the Extreme Supercars race.

For Goosen, the change offers another chance to end a frustrating maiden full season in the national championship on a positive note.

The AA South Africa-backed driver has shown competitive pace throughout the year, but mechanical problems and racing incidents have often prevented him from turning that speed into the results he deserves.

Despite those setbacks, Goosen occupies sixth place in the championship standings with 103 points heading into the Zwartkops meeting.

The Pretoria circuit holds particularly fond memories for the youngster. It was here, during the final round of the 2025 championship, that he announced his arrival in the Polo Cup by claiming victory on his debut weekend.

Returning to Zwartkops for Round 3 earlier this season, Goosen again demonstrated his ability to compete among the frontrunners. He progressed into the Superpole qualifying shootout before securing a third-place finish in the opening race, confirming that his previous success at the venue was no coincidence.

However, the months since have tested his resolve.

At the most recent championship round at Aldo Scribante in August, Goosen showed encouraging pace during Friday's practice sessions, only for a completely sheared engine mount to compromise his qualifying performance. His troubles continued in the second race when contact with another competitor sent him off the circuit and into the tyre barriers, bringing a disappointing end to another promising weekend.

With its tight corners, short straights and limited overtaking opportunities, Zwartkops places considerable importance on qualifying and track position. Goosen's experience at the circuit, combined with his previous success, should provide a solid foundation for another competitive showing.

Having already proved that he can challenge at the front of the Polo Cup field, the focus now shifts towards putting together a complete weekend without the setbacks that have characterised much of his 2026 campaign.

While the championship title may be beyond his reach, there is still plenty to race for. A strong result at Zwartkops would not only strengthen his position in the standings but also provide valuable momentum heading into the newly added season finale at Kyalami.
