Van Rooyen Chases Elusive Win at Zwartkops Finale

Reigning South African Touring Cars (SATC) Champion Michael van Rooyen will return to Zwartkops Raceway on 16–17 October for the seventh and final round of the 2026 championship, determined to end a challenging title defence with his first victory of the season.

The Toyota GAZOO Racing South Africa driver returns to familiar territory, having secured his maiden SATC championship at the Pretoria circuit twelve months ago. While successfully defending that title has proved difficult, Van Rooyen remains firmly focused on ending the season on a positive note.

His 2026 campaign has been one of steady improvement. Following a difficult opening round at Killarney, Van Rooyen and the team have continued developing their Toyota Corolla, gradually closing the gap to the front of the field.

Zwartkops provided one of his strongest performances of the season during May's third round. After securing his first podium of the campaign, he finished the weekend as overall runner-up, demonstrating the progress being made with the car.

Further encouraging performances followed at Aldo Scribante Raceway, where the team continued refining the package despite facing strong competition from the Volkswagen and BMW challengers.

Van Rooyen heads into the finale fourth in the championship on 91 points, according to the standings published after Round 5. He trails teammate Jason Coetzee by just two points in the battle for third, with Klayden Ensor-Smith a further eight points ahead.

The championship's penultimate round at Killarney in September ended prematurely following the tragic events that claimed the life of Extreme Supercars competitor Marcel Angel. Coming just days after the passing of fellow SATC competitor Robert Wolk, it was an exceptionally difficult period for the South African motorsport community.

With attention now turning to the season finale, Van Rooyen will be eager to make the most of his return to Zwartkops.

The 2.4-kilometre circuit's combination of technical corners, elevation changes and heavy braking zones demands a well-balanced car. Having competed there earlier in the season, Van Rooyen and the team have valuable data as they prepare for their final outing.

Although a race victory has remained elusive throughout 2026, Van Rooyen has shown that he can still challenge the leading contenders. With a podium position in the championship standings within reach, there is plenty left to fight for.

For the Rustenburg driver, the objective is straightforward: finish the season strongly, reward the team's continued efforts and, ideally, secure the victory that has escaped him this year.

Next weekend’s finale kicks off with Friday practice, followed by qualifying on Saturday morning and two races.
