Misfortune Overshadows Goosen’s Polo Cup Pace
Jayden Goosen’s pace promised far more than the results ultimately reflected during the latest Astron Energy Polo Cup outing at Aldo Scribante Racetrack.
The Pretoria driver was quick throughout Friday’s practice sessions and carried that speed into qualifying. Despite reporting that something was not right with the car, Goosen still delivered a competitive qualifying performance. The seriousness of the problem only became apparent afterwards when the team discovered that an engine mount had completely sheared.
Goosen put the mechanical setback behind him to complete Saturday morning’s opening race in eighth position. While it was another top-ten result, the finish did not fully reflect the speed shown by the AA-backed driver during the build-up to the weekend.
Hopes of progressing further in Race 2 were dashed following contact with another competitor while battling for ninth position. The impact sent Goosen sliding off the circuit and into the tyre barrier, ending his challenge abruptly.
Although he managed to recover and rejoin the race, Goosen found himself at the back of the field with little opportunity to regain the lost ground. Goosen would later be excluded from the race result, deemed responsible for the incident.
“It has been a difficult season because there have been several weekends where misfortune has taken the result out of our hands,” said Goosen. “That can be disheartening because you put in the work and prepare as well as you can, but you do not always get to control the narrative once the racing starts. It is always difficult to bounce back after adversity, especially when you know the pace is there. Giving up is not an option, though. We will keep working, keep learning and continue fighting for the results we know we are capable of achieving.”
Despite another frustrating outcome, Goosen leaves Gqeberha knowing that his underlying pace remains strong. The challenge now is to put the disappointment behind him and turn that speed into the result it deserves at the next championship outing, which returns to Cape Town over 18-19 September.
