Rookie Goosen Charges Forward After Qualifying Setback
The Astron Energy Polo Cup made its long-awaited return to Mpumalanga this past weekend, with Red Star Raceway hosting Round 2 of the championship for the first time in four years. For rookie Jayden Goosen, it proved to be a weekend of resilience, recovery, and outright pace.
Goosen showed strong intent from the outset, enjoying a productive Friday in which he consistently featured inside the top four. The highlight came in the final practice session, where he topped the timesheets, underlining his potential and exciting fans about his pace heading into qualifying. However, Friday afternoon didn’t unfold as planned. Despite the promising build-up, Goosen could only qualify 11th. Reflecting on the session, the rookie admitted to pushing beyond the limit in search of lap time, a small misjudgment that proved costly in a tightly contested field.
Starting from the sixth row, Goosen faced the challenge of fighting through the highly competitive mid-pack, a task that often defines a driver’s racecraft. Rising to the occasion, he delivered an impressive drive in Race 1, carving his way through the field to secure sixth place at the chequered flag.
Carrying that momentum into Race 2, Goosen continued his charge forward. With confident, calculated moves and strong pace throughout, he raced to finish fifth, while also setting the fastest lap of the race, a clear indication of the speed he had shown all weekend.
Despite the qualifying setback, the weekend ultimately highlighted Goosen’s ability to recover, adapt, and compete at the sharp end of the field.
“Friday gave us a lot of confidence, the car felt really strong, and topping that last session showed we had the pace. In qualifying, I just overdid it trying to find a bit more, and that cost us. But I’m really happy with how we bounced back in the races. To come through from 11th and finish inside the top five, and get the fastest lap, shows what we’re capable of. A big thank you to my team and sponsors for the support, we’ll take the positives and come back even stronger at the next round.”
Zwartkops Raceway, where Goosen claimed his maiden Polo Cup victory at the final round of the 2025 season, will host the next round over 22-23 May 2026.
